WHAT IS BOTOX?
Botox is a purified protein derived from the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. HOW BOTOX WORKS
Botox works by temporarily inhibiting the functioning of the muscles in the underlying treated area. By doing this, the patient cannot contract the muscles and therefore cannot crease the overlying skin, which causes ‘wrinkles’.
Over time, the treated muscle will recover from this inhibition and you will require repeat treatments.
Initially, you may need treatment 3-4 months apart for approximately a year.. Typically, treatments can then be spaced further apart.
THE BOTOX TREATMENT
Using a fine needle results in near painless injections
- Ice is used to further minimize any pain that may be experienced.
- Bruising is minimal, if there is any at all. The most common area to show a small bruise is around the eye where ” crows feet” are injected.
- You may experience a very mild headache. If so, you may wish to take Tylenol or Advil.
- You may also feel a mild tingling sensation in the injected areas for a few days. This is normal and expected.
- For the Botox to disperse well into the muscle injected, try to make facial movements like frowning and squinting a few times each hour for the first 3 – 4 hours.
- You will begin to notice the effect within 2 – 4 days.
- Maximal effect and result will be seen by day 14.
- As with all medication, not everyone responds in exactly the same way.
