Spring Cleaning for Your Body

Hello dear friend,

Do you Spring Clean?

We have been doing a lot of purging at our house. And brightening up things. Made me think of my body – so I started a bit of Spring Cleaning for my body too.

So many people tell me they are doing a cleanse. The first comment I have is, “if it’s like a Draino effect, don’t do it!” and the next comment I have is “Do not restrict calories”. So it is makes you drink juice only or eat soups or limits your intake of good nutrition – it’s NOT GOOD FOR YOU. Why? Because your body needs energy and nutrients to DO the process of detoxification. Otherwise you are just starving yourself and see fluids shift that look like weight loss.

(I have a patient and her friend who did the American Heart detox and didn’t even dro pa pound even though they ate soups and increased fibre! Proof that:

  1. Detoxification is NOT to be confused with weight loss
  2. Starving yourself doesn’t necessarily lead to weight loss (which is a WHOLE other topic).

Some questions to ask yourself:

First question: why should I cleanse?

Second question: Am I toxic

Third question: where do I start

Why should I cleanse (detoxify)?

No matter how pristine your lifestyle (You eat perfectly, you live in an environmentally clean house, you use only natural stuff on your body and you only drink pure water) – you live on this planet and you step outside right?

Now, Michael Jackson was on to something! If you could live in a glass bubble; you may get away with not detoxifying yourself.

If you are the perfect person described above; you simply need to increase your nutrient intake without formal detoxification.

For the rest of us who travel, eat out, drink wine, and pump our own gas, and clean our own houses: well, it builds up!

My apologies if my facetiousness offends anyone – that is not my intention.

Our planet has 80 000 more toxins and chemicals today that when our grandparents were alive.

Your liver is the most important organ for purifying your body. Your liver not only cleans out things you breathe in and chemicals in the food you eat, your liver also neutralizes your hormones, inactivates any medicines you take and also deals with chemicals absorbed through your skin from household cleaners to body products.

If your liver does not perform its functions well, things get backed up! This cannot be measured on blood tests.

A few decades ago, a system of enzymes were discovered to be responsible for processes in the liver. (cytochrome enzymes).

We now know that this is why drug interactions occur.

More and more scientific evidence is emerging to show correlation between health issues like obesity and heart diseases are linked to toxic things (lead and hypertension, obesity and pesticides, hormone disruption with phthalates and solvents).

We also know that when your liver does not perform a process called ‘methylation’ efficiently, byproducts of the abnormal process can damage DNA.

Cells with damaged DNA has the potential to become cancer cells.

Homocysteine rises when your liver is not functioning well. There is now a known association with heart disease, strokes and dementia. THIS IS SERIOUS STUFF!

Steps

1. reduce your toxic load:

  • eat organic foods (especially the ‘dirty dozen’)
  • eat whole foods and not processed.

2. enhance nutrition

  • take nutritional supplements and provide your body and cellular processes with the building blocks and ingredients they need to work optimally.

3. measure your load

Researchers at the University of Toronto have been testing CoQ-10, a well-known addition to many anti-aging creams, to document results on other areas of the body.

Men, are you looking to ‘Get it up’???

Yes, a lot of things go ‘down’ as you get older. That is, if you simply accept that it is ‘normal’ to wear out as you get older. In fact, some things ‘go soft’ – not just what you may think about; but your abdomen, your mood, your bones.

Hormones are the secret chemicals of life; performance, and longevity. When your hormones are balanced; you can ‘Get it up’ and feel and look younger.

Key players in healthy aging are: Cortisol, Insulin, thyroid hormone; DHEA; testosterone; growth hormone.

This post will focus on cortisol and testosterone.

When your stress hormone CORTISOL goes up; all your hormones and how they function are affected. If the stress is prolonged; (like when you have long work hours, a second job; kids to co-ordinate and get to activities; chores to do and a social life to keep up with; let alone church, gym, volunteer projects and such) your normal balance of hormones that keep you performing at your peak is disrupted.

Cortisol, when it remains high for prolonged periods of time, creates a ‘tear down’ state that is greater than your ‘buildup/ repair’ state.

Symptoms that could appear: (when your levels are sub-optimal; but not deficient)

  • Low energy
  • Weight gain
  • Low sex drive
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Sugar and caffeine dependence
  • Irritable mood

What you can do:

  1. See your doctor to rule out important conditions like diabetes, anemia, autoimmune disorders.
  2. Manage your stress: choose to lower your load; practice meditation and yoga. Laugh.

TESTOSTERONE

Many men start to make lower levels of testosterone after age 35-40. Being ‘in the normal range’ doesn’t mean much. Low testosterone is also related to low blood sugar control (diabetic men have improved control of their blood sugar levels when testosterone is optimized, and heart disease risk is lowered in men with optimal testosterone levels).

Sun safe: Facts vs Myth

Skin cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer, even higher than breast and lung cancer.

Is simply being in the sun the cause of skin cancer???

Cancer occurs when a normal cell becomes abnormal during the replication cycle. Every day, you are replacing cells and every few years; your entire body is not the same since all cells are eventually replaced with new ones.

If this abnormal cell continues to replicate, a mass of abnormal cells develops. This is what forms a cancerous lesion or mass.

So, for Skin Cancer, or any cancer for that matter; you need to form an abnormal cell during replication.

What usually protects you?

A healthy immune system is the first step; since this walls off abnormal cells and ensures it does not turn into a cancerous mass. At any point in time; up to 2% of cells in your body are ‘precancer’ or damaged and can become cancer. Not everyone develops cancer because your body is designed to stop the abnormal cell replication cycle in its tracks.

When your body has an adequate supply of anti-oxidants; these ‘mop up’ cell damage and help you make normal cells.

The sun is not your enemy. Why did your forefathers, who lived in an age without sunblock; and worked and toiled in the outdoors not have such a high incidence of skin cancer, or any cancer for that matter?

Because the factors that lead to cancer are MANY. Join me in my workshop to learn more about the steps you can take to lower your risk for cancer and improve your longevity.

In the meantime; here are some steps to take to enjoy your time in the sun without increasing your risk for cancer:

1. Eat a diet rich in anti-oxidants. Deeply colored fruit and vegetables should form the greater part of your food-style.

2. Take Vitamin C. Vitamins A, C, E are potent anti-oxidants. (Substances that fight free radicals thereby protecting your cells).

3. Supplement your Vitamin D: More than 90% of Canadians have low levels of Vit D, regardless of how much sun they get. The use of sunblock further reduces your ability to make Vit D in the sun.

Take 2000-5000iu a day to reach optimal levels; have your doctor check your levels to avoid overdosing.

4. Resveratrol is a powerful anti-oxidant shown to help you regenerate healthy cells.
